Preservation Pennsylvania and the Kreutz Creek Valley Preservation Society (KCVPS), based in Hellam Township, have formed a partnership to preserve the threatened historic Mifflin House in Hellam Township, York County. Preservation Pennsylvania named Mifflin House to its Pennsylvania At Risk list in 2017. A brief was filed in the York County Court of Common Pleas to stop plans by the current owners, the Blessing Family, and their developer partner, Kinsley Equities, LLC, to demolish the historic property overlooking the Susquehanna River.
The Mifflin House has been certified by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as a property with national historic significance and is considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. "The determination is based on the Underground Railroad activities of the builders, Quakers Jonathan and Susanna Mifflin," said Katina Snyder of KCVPS "They opened their home and farm as a safe house from the early 1800s until the late 1850s. The farm property also played a pivotal role during the Civil War."

Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credit: Success!
The Historic Tax Credit (HTC) survived the reconciliation process and appears in the final tax reform bill at 20% with a change to the credit delivery timing, now over five years. The 10% pre-1936 non-historic rehabilitation credit was eliminated.
As the National Trust for Historic Preservation notes:
This extraordinary success underscores the power of the credit and the broad support it has earned in the preservation community. Its inclusion in the most expansive overhaul of our nation’s tax code in more than three decades is a reaffirmation that reviving older and historic buildings is sound federal policy and good for the nation.
Thank you to all of you who sent letters, made calls and sent emails to advocate for the Historic Tax Credit. Your efforts made a difference! We have one more request; please consider sending a thank you note to your legislators! It's great to be vocal when there's a challenge and gracious with appreciation as follow up.

What About the Windows? Help Save Them!
Preservation Pennsylvania is pleased to announce publication of "Considering the Repair, Retrofit, and Replacement of Historic Windows." Useful for HARBS and CLGs, the guide also provides useful information for individual preservationists to advocate for saving historic windows rather than replacing them.
Help spread the word and be an advocate for original windows!
This project is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office via the Certified Local Government program, and is made possible by cooperation of the Boroughs and HARBs of Gettysburg, Bellefonte and Mercersburg.
(Know of a great window restoration/refit expert? Send us the info at firstname.lastname@example.org -- thanks!)
