All Aboard for Preservation Month!

Join us in the Parlor CarTo celebrate Preservation Month, Preservation Pennsylvania invites you on a very special railway outing on the historic Colebrookdale Railroad in Berks County.

Please join us on Sunday, May 21 for a trip through the Secret Valley, one of the most historic, beautiful, geologically-unique, and naturally-unspoiled valleys in the United States.

This exclusive opportunity welcomes Preservation Pennsylvania's guests to the restored Parlor Car, where you'll enjoy lovely scenery as our guest speaker, incoming Preservation Pennsylvania board chair and Colebrookdale Railroad director Nathaniel Guest, provides an overview of the area's remarkable history and exciting plans for its future. We'll depart Boyertown at 2:30pm for a two-hour journey.

PA State Conference on HeritageSee you at this year's conference!

Register now for the Pennsylvania Statewide Conference on Heritage. We hope to see you in Carlisle from June 14 –16 for inspiring sessions and great networking opportunities, not to mention the opportunity to explore Carlisle's amazing layers of history. Our theme this year is Community Connections: Stories, Places, and Ideas that Matter and the plenary speaker comes to us from the Orton Family Foundation "Community Heart & Soul" project.
Special tours explore the perplexing history of the Carlisle Indian School, traverse Cumberland County landscapes, investigate "a House Divided" during the Civil War, hit the historic highlights in town, or invite you to celebrate a new life for an old inn.
There are almost two dozen sessions options to choose among. Pick a topic track of interest (Untold Stories, Archaeology, Built Environment, Transportation and so on) and find sessions with the related icon.

Now accepting submissions for the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards

Presented each fall by Preservation Pennsylvania, the annual awards recognize significant contributions in the field of historic preservation made by both individuals and organizations. Recognition encompasses the categories of preservation initiatives, construction and archaeology projects. Pennsylvania's highest honor, the F. Otto Haas Award, is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to preservation made by an individual or group.
Eligible projects must have been completed in the last five years:
June 1, 2012 – January 31, 2017.
We look forward to receiving your submissions! Please help us spread the word and share with your favorite preservation people and the people you know involved in outstanding preservation projects!

Thank you for making a community connection

Mindy Crawford leads discussionMany thanks to everyone who made the time to come out to the Community Connections Open House sessions across the state. Your insights and opinions will help shape the next Statewide Historic Preservation Plan that will create a vision for historic preservation in Pennsylvania for the next five years and guide decision-making, policy, and planning at the local, state, and regional level. The PA State Historic Preservation Office (PA SHPO) will release the plan in 2018.

guide to historic windowsWhat About the Windows? Help Save Them!

Preservation Pennsylvania is pleased to announce publication of "Considering the Repair, Retrofit, and Replacement of Historic Windows." Useful for HARBS and CLGs, the guide also provides useful information for individual preservationists to advocate for saving historic windows rather than replacing them.
Help spread the word and be an advocate for original windows!
This project is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office via the Certified Local Government program, and is made possible by cooperation of the Boroughs and HARBs of Gettysburg, Bellefonte and Mercersburg.
(Know of a great window restoration/refit expert? Send us the info at ssmith@preservationpa.org -- thanks!)
