  • Pittsburgh’s Immaculate Conception Church

Pittsburgh’s Immaculate Conception Church was added to Preservation Pennsylvania’s Pennsylvania At Risk in 2022, after the church was closed by the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh. The building faces several challenges, including intense development pressure, pressing maintenance issues, and the challenges of finding an appropriate reuse. While Pittsburgh has a number of outstanding houses of worship in various styles, the Immaculate Conception Church is unlike any other religious building in the region.

Preservation Pennsylvania, in collaboration with PA Hallowed Grounds, is pleased to announce their pilot project, the Pennsylvania African American Cemetery Stewards Network, has been selected to receive grant funding from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

  • WEBINAR: Historic Real Estate with Whitney Martinko

June’s webinar featured Dr. Whitney Martinko discussing her book Historic Real Estate: Market Morality and the Politics of Preservation in the Early United States. The webinar was presented in partnership with our colleagues at the Preservation League of New York State. If you weren’t able to attend, watch the webinar recording.

  • East Broad Top Railroad: A New Beginning

The East Broad Top Railroad (Rockhill Furnace, Huntingdon County) appeared on our very first Pennsylvania At Risk in 1992, so it gives us great pleasure to host this webinar featuring Linn Moedinger and Jane Sheffield to share the exciting revival of the railroad. Once called “the dormant gem of railway preservation,” the EBT RR is a rare narrow-gauge railway and time capsule of industrial technology. The trains are running again, the remarkable archives are being catalogued for digitization, and a dedicated staff, volunteers and friends are working toward a bright future. Enjoy the recording of the webinar presentation.
